Discussion Board Assignments 1
Discussion Board Assignments (150 points)
For each assignment, new topics for discussion will be posted in Canvas. Students are expected
to make several meaningful contributions to the discussion. First, students are expected to make
an initial post on the topic of discussion. Next, students are expected to respond to the posts
made by two other students. Guidelines for content are included on the next page.
Grading (10 total points per assignment):
Part 1:

• Provide an initial substantive post that addresses the questions or issues
to be discussed.
• Answer all questions using relevant terms and concepts from the

assignment.
• Comments posted after the due date and time will not receive credit for
this portion of the assignment.

Discussion Board Assignments 2
How to generate a good discussion post:
a) Be professional and courteous. Online communication lacks the non-verbal cues that
provide much of the meaning in face-to-face conversations. Choose your words carefully,
phrase your sentences clearly, and keep your sentences and paragraphs brief.
b) When responding to posts by other students, please address them using their first and
last name at the beginning of your response to their post. Please start your post, as
illustrated below:
• Pat Winter, (Student that provided the initial post)
• I thought that you provided excellent insights about the topic… (Your response)
• Regards,
• Chris Summer (Your first and last name)
c) Justify your answers by referring to your readings, facts, or personal experience to
support your statements, ideas, and opinions. In other words, after addressing the
question (i.e., what you think), you must state why you believe that you have provided
relevant and meaningful comments.
d) Pose a thought-provoking question related to the topic at the end of your discussion. Your
questions may help others respond to your comments.
e) Respect each other’s ideas, feelings, and experiences. Showing appreciation of how
someone has contributed to your learning is an important skill. This does not mean you
agree with your classmate; instead, it demonstrates awareness of your classmate’s
personal views and your ability to interpret information.
f) Appreciation is often given for a specific part of your classmate’s comments that:
• Clarified something that was confusing or unclear
• Opened up a whole new line of thinking for you
• Provided helpful evidence or insights
• Identified a gap in reasoning that needed to be addressed
• Was intriguing and had not been considered before
• Showed the connection between two ideas when the relationship had not been
clear
• Helped increase your understanding of an issue
g) Explore disagreements and support assertions with data and evidence from the text and
online news sources. However, please maintain a professional tone even when you
disagree with your classmate.
h) Do not use postings such as “I agree,” “Who cares,” or “ditto.” They do not add to the
discussion topic, take up space on the Discussion Boards, and will not receive credit for
this assignment.
i) Avoid posting large blocks of text. Please break long blocks of text into paragraphs and
use a space between paragraphs.
Discussion Board Assignments 3
j) Do not use all capital letters that make it difficult to read your comments. Your message
comes across as though you were shouting.
k) Proofread what you post. A helpful hint for use with both Discussion Board assignments
and email: Compose your message in your word-processing application to check spelling,
punctuation, and grammar; then copy and paste your composition into the discussion.
l) You will not be able to edit or delete comments from the Discussion Board Assignment.
m) There are three critical components for providing feedback to other students:
1) Start with a positive statement about their work.
2) Provide input, feedback, questions, or research that adds value to the information
that was posted by the other student.
3) End with a positive statement about the topic or discussion provided by the other
student.
There will be two due dates for each Discussion Board. Your initial response to discussion
questions will be due on Thursdays, and responses to other students will be due on Sundays each
week. Comments submitted after the due dates will not receive credit for the assignment.
NOTE: Initial comments and feedback to other students will need to be posted by 11:59 p.m.
Central Time on the due date. Comments and feedback posted after the due date and time will
not receive credit for the assignment.
