To become a PMHNP, individuals must first become registered nurses (RNs) and pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). They must then complete a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program with a focus on psychiatric mental health nursing.
