Week 2 Case Studies
Case 1 Mr. Smith, a male elementary school teacher, is charged with molesting several female students at his school. Mr. Smith has worked at the school for many years and has always been regarded as an outstanding teacher. Mr. Smith decorates his classroom in Disney characters, brings treats for the children, and spends extra time with them Helping with classwork during recess and after school. He makes a lot of sacrifices of his personal time for the children. The District Attorneys’ office is in need of an expert who can provide a psycho-behavioral description of those who prey upon school children. The expert will be asked to view depositions given by several alleged victims and provide an analysis. The District Attorney is also asking for guidance from the expert in formulating questions to be asked of Mr. Smith, the alleged victims, school administrators, and parents at the trial.
Case 2 A company employee hides a video camera in the women’s bathroom near his office. He records several women over 5 months until, one day, a janitor happens to find the camera and reports it to company administrators. The employee was reported to the police and terminated from his employment. Eventually, the victims were notified of the recordings and filed both criminal and civil complaints against the employee and the company. Attorneys are looking for an expert who can Help them in determining the level of harm the victims experienced. The expert will need to review police reports and depositions, view the videos taken of the victims, interview the victims, and be able to testify if necessary.
