8.1 Discussion: Leadership in the SWOT process

Luke Stradinger posted Feb 21, 2022

Internal Analysis related to the SWOT process would consist of analyzing the organizations’ strengths and weaknesses. The external analysis would be formulated around the opportunities and threats facing the organization. Positional leaders sponsor strategic planning processes by emphasizing the importance of the sponsored effort and support resource allocation projects used to support the planning process such as finances, time, and energy. They also envision a clear result of their efforts and encourage creative thinking among team members to reach strategic goals related to the planning process. These leaders are supportive of the idea of reaching out to outside experts to help bring value and credibility to the decisions impacting the result. Leaders who champion the cause lead by example, dedicated to the process and the result (Bryson, 1987).

The process facilitators play a key role in the development of the strategic planning process. They keep the process on track because they understand the internal elements required to achieve a successful outcome. This is accomplished by establishing a cohesive teamwork environment among the facilitators, sponsors, and champions of the planning process. Leaders of these cohesive work teams are focused on their team achievements of goals and responsibilities as they pertain to the strategic planning process. This is accomplished through clear and concise communication between team members so that the workforce moves in the same direction, giving it more power of performance (Bryson, 1987).

The result of team-building based on good communication and team unity is a quality strategic plan through a visionary leader who embraces and practices all of these leadership skills as they relate to the SWOT analysis of internal and external environmental aspects related to the organization, fostering the need for a strategic plan. This is accomplished when the leader ensures that the right people are in the right place at the right time (Bryson, 1987).
