Assignment Guidelines

Heat maps are useful visualization methods used for a variety of purposes. For example, web site heat maps show us where users click most frequently on a website. In this lab, we’ll be building a business services heat map, following the examples in Chapter 5 of Enterprise Architecture for Business Success. Note that we can categorize services based on their ability to help the business differentiate itself and by the impact their outage might have on the bottom line. For example, an outage of an insurance portal’s premium processing system would significantly impact the bottom line, but it doesn’t differentiate the company from others. Every insurance company has such a system. This categorization might then be used by senior management to guide investments of the future.

Using a color-coding scheme, create a business services “heat map” that identifies both the differentiator and impact of services for a company. Select another Fortune 500 company (different from previous assignments) and provide at least 25 distinct business services and then use colors, text, and symbols to rank and categorize these services. You can design this map in any graphic tool you prefer, including PowerPoint. Submit your finished graphic along with a brief 100-word summary highlighting critical areas that upper management should focus on.
