Thurs. 2/24 Image and Text: Editorial Cartoons and Spoof Ads

· Look at some examples of recent political editorial cartoons: https://www.usnews.com/cartoons (Links to an external site.) For context on how to evaluate these, look at the following overview of the techniques used in editorial cartoons. (Similar techniques are used in spoof ads as well): https://hti.osu.edu/opper/editorial-cartoons-introduction (Links to an external site.)

· Look through some of the spoof print ads published on the Adbusters website: https://www.adbusters.org/spoof-ads (Links to an external site.)

· Watch this sample spoof video ad: Revolutionary Apple Laptop: https://www.theonion.com/apple-introduces-revolutionary-new-laptop-with-no-keybo-1819594761 (Links to an external site.)

Part I: (10 points) Discuss the rhetoric and sources of humor in ONE editorial cartoon, spoof print ad, or spoof video ad. Please paste the image or video link into your post, so I can see it along with your analysis. In your analysis, respond to the following: 1) What is the rhetorical situation (purpose/context/target audience)? 2) What rhetorical strategies (such as logos, pathos, ethos, Kairos) does the rhetor use? 3) How do image and text work together in conveying the central point? 4) What specific verbal and visual techniques are used by the rhetor—such as caricature or other forms of exaggeration, symbolism, stereotypes, irony, puns, analogies, manipulation of a logo or slogan, etc.?(Give a couple of examples).

Part II: (10 points) Construct your own editorial cartoon or spoof ad and post it here along with a brief note about the rhetorical situation and your use of rhetorical strategies. In creating your image or video, you can use whatever method you like and have available: drawing and scanning an image, manipulating images online through Photoshop, adding new captions to existing images, creating a PowerPoint… [If you like what you create in this exercise, you can choose to develop this further into your final rhetoric of humor project.]
