Psychological Aspects of Short Fiction For this week’s discussion, we’ll focus on working with psychological aspects of short fiction. You may choose from either “A Rose for Emily” (pg 30-36) or “A Haunted House” (pg 631) for your initial prompt, and carefully apply at least two key terms of psychoanalytic criticism to the piece you’re analyzing. Remember that your initial discussion board response should be around 200 words to meet the minimum discussion board guidelines for a “C” score. Your responses to classmates should be at minimum 100 words. Consider at least two of the following aspects of psychoanalytic literary theory for your discussion post (and be sure to review the Wk 2 Online Presentation on psychoanalytic literary theory): The Mind and the Subconscious The Ego, the Superego, and the Id Complexes of Oedipus and Electra Anxiety and Holding Back phallic symbols and pictures of women Defenses and Defense Mechanisms The Effects of Trauma and Sibling Rivalry on Death The Conscious and the Unconscious The ID, the Ego, and the Superego The Oedipus Complex and Electra Complex Anxiety and Repression Phallic Symbols and Female Imagery Defenses and Defense Mechanisms Sibling Rivalry Trauma and Relationship to Death (Thanatos or “Death Work”) Remember to provide textual proof and examples in your analysis and to provide proper APA documentation and an APA style References citation for your story.
