E-learning is a term that is used more frequently to describe the delivery of training materials by online methods such as the Internet, intranets, or even extranets. Background
Technology, through the internet and automation, has revolutionized education. The introduction of e-learning allows knowledge transfer via electronic devices. This has helped in the fight to save the environment by reducing carbon footprint while enabling students to learn at their convenience (Mikropoulos, 2018). However, there is the challenge of internet clutter and lack of face-to-face interaction with the tutor, which distracts students as they search for learning material online.
E-learning versus traditional classroom training
Students can access learning materials easily at any time and place through online libraries and attend classes without having to travel to class physically. This enables time and cost efficiency for both parties. However, given that it is reliant on an online connection, e-learning provides a challenge to students with no access to the internet or expensive data packages.
The traditional classroom was modified during its construction to provide optimum student concentration. In e-learning, this has not been upheld given that online adverts are present in many, if not all, learning websites. Thus to avoid distraction and increase retention, traditional classrooms are better.
Preference in improving skills and knowledge given the task at hand
Student preference depends on the physical location of a learning institution, internet consumption and payment rates plus the complexity of the skill in question. E-learning is preferred if the traditional classroom is far, and the data charges offset the time and cost of travelling to the classroom. However, complex skills and knowledge require a traditional classroom setting.
Traditional classroom training is still favourable for practical classes and disciplines such as engineering and medicine. It will be difficult to fully move these disciplines into the digital space unless AI is improved to Help students in carrying out practical lessons and assignments. Also, for disciplines that have comprehensive assignments, the tutor’s input is highly needed; hence, a full e-learning approach will not be beneficial to the student in terms of guidance.
