Students who choose to write this essay need to use at least 3 peer-reviewed academic
sources, properly cited and quoted in MLA format without plagiarizing, paraphrasing without
citing, or using dumped quotes. Essays also need to quote the book club book as relevant. It is
recommended students discuss their essay with me in a conference of about 15 minutes. This
essay needs to have a clear thesis statement, logical organization, and good editing. I will not
look over your essay for you, but you are permitted to use the Center for Writing as you work on
this essay. You are also allowed to ask TCU librarians for help locating quality peer-reviewed
sources in academic journals.
Essays will be graded on their adherence to these guidelines and the quality of original
interpretation of the book. Students may earn up to a 60 by completing this essay. Whatever
grade they earn will be the percentage of 60 points (so, if a student makes a 100 on this essay,
they will make a 60 in the gradebook; if they make an 80, they will receive 80% of 60 points
which is 48, etc.).
