Concept of Psychology

Psychology entails studying human minds, their behaviors, attitude, and how they adapt to certain things. Several studies on psychology show that it has several concepts. The study of Psychology helps immensely in understanding how the human mind works and its stability. Several educations on this have been proliferating, and people have different outcomes. This research well focuses our study on four concepts, which include: Psychological disorders and other Mental health issues, Issues related to gender and sexuality, Motivation and emotion and lastly, personality.
Psychological disorders, otherwise known as mental disorders, refer to an unstable mindset, which quickly causes human behavior changes. Also, mental health issues cause discomfort and instability to someone. This problem brings about the variation of someone’s mood and attitude, often from wrong to bad in such a short span. People suffering from this become loners as they cannot handle being with people for long. Mental issues come in different, forms which include; Stress, anxiety disorders, Bad eating habits, addictions. (Masuda et al., 2010) Many people e in the United States, or rather the word as a whole, suffer from mental illness, which is caused by several factors such as Inheritance; someone can suffer from illness if it is in the genes that are if a family member has suffered from the same. Different backgrounds and environment can also be the c; unfavorable environments are likely to increase the cause, stressful positions such as having financial problems and having a bad experience, traumatic or child abuse. (Masuda et al., 2010). It affects one’s ability to perform actions leading to poor performance in school or even at work. It can also affect how one relates to people because of mood change, which is likely to negatively impact their lives.
Many symptoms accompany a psychological disorder, feeling sad, overthinking, less concentration, fear, sleepless nights, drug addiction, anger issues, and suicidal thoughts. In a few cases, the symptoms can also be physical. Preventing mental illness is not as easy; however, one can prevent getting to a worse stage. This can be done by ensuring they maintain good health status, regularly visit the therapist, taking good care of themselves by eating well, and having enough rest (Masuda et al., 2010). The affected should also be free to talk about their problems with their loved ones. Symptoms never get better if the illness is left untreated, and therefore it is advisable that if anyone sees the signs, they should seek medical treatment. The doctors prescribe for them relaxation drugs. It can also be treated through other ways like counseling and encouragement from reliable people.
Motivation and emotion are seen to have cost and effect relationship. Motivation is the desire or urges to pursue something or a particular goal, whereas emotion arises from the motive to achieve, which comes with the desire. Most therapists believe that Motivation is a crucial determinant of someone’s behavior. Someone behaves according to their set motive to achieve. There are several motivation types, such as biological Motivation and social Motivation. Biological motivations can include Motivation for basic needs, whereas social motivations can include; Motivation for acknowledgment, acceptance, social approval. Motivation is the key driver to someone’s behavior; hence changing motivations lead to change in behaviors (Filipp, 1996).
Human beings can sometimes have a change of Motivation depending on their desires and this, for a fact, lead to different changes in their behaviors. Therefore, when motivated or have emotions, we feel the experience, leading us to respond to our surroundings. An emotion is then how we respond or feel towards our feelings, and most of the time, it can be adaptive. For example, we avoid driving while drunk because we fear death; we care for animals because we feel love. Emotions show where our attention lies and guide our behaviors. Negative emotions are destructive as they can make us venture our anger to innocent people (Filipp, 1996). After learning about the two, we can see that emotions and motivations drive us into acting in one way or another. Therefore, they are closely related.
Someone’s personality defines them and makes them who they are from how they talk, handle issues, and relate with people. Personality is one of the major concepts of psychology. Psychologist aim at finding out how peoples personality differs. People are different depending on several things, and personality is no exception. However, research shows that other people can also have the same personalities. Personality is what makes a person, it comes from within them, and they are likely to remain that way for the rest of their lives. It constitutes thoughts, character, behavior, talking, attitude, and sometimes someone’s dressing can also determine their personality. Studying personality helps researchers to determine how people are most likely to respond to specific scenarios and situations. Some theories try to explain the concept of personality further. These theories include; Trait theory, which argues that someone’s personality depends on their trait; cardinal traits are the ones that someone is known for their specific trait, an example is Mother Teresa; cardinal Freud’s theory, which is one of the popular theories, argues that one’s personality develops at an early age (Hogan et al., 1997). Individuals need to understand their personality to boost their relationship with others, understand themselves better, and know how to cope with people. Some people also have personality disorders like being antisocial and narcissistic, which is treatable by psychologists.
Issues related to gender and sexuality have also been discussed. Here, the argument is based on sex, sexuality, and men’s and women’s different roles. The sex-gender is either male or female. Based on their roles, their behavior and attitude are observed and what people already think as a whole. They can also be determined based on their sexuality. There are certain beliefs on how different gender should act, behave, or even talk (Fassinger, 2000). Women are generally given less hectic responsibilities and are most often discriminated against, unlike men. They are subjected to discrimination. People have been discriminated against based on sexuality, especially the LGBT. The LGBT face discrimination by others who have not yet accepted them, bringing about distress, which will cause psychological issues. The minority rights should then be protected, and the ones with health issues should seek medical help and be advised accordingly.
