• Review how your classmates achieved each course competency and transferable skill.
• Identify new knowledge others gained you had not considered.
• Describe how this new knowledge could impact your nursing practice.
The first-course competency is to design appropriate, multidimensional nursing care for optimal health, including client preferences, values, and beliefs. I achieved the course competency by reading Saunders comprehensive review for the NCLEX-RN® examination 8th edition, Chapter six. I learned that acknowledging and accepting personal, cultural, spiritual, and religious differences with a nonjudgmental attitude are crucial in providing culturally sensitive care (Silvestri et al., 2020). The new knowledge I gained will Help me in becoming a well-rounded nurse who has complete respect for my client’s preferences, beliefs, and values.
The second-course competency is to select approaches to client care that incorporate care and comfort, risk reduction, health promotion, and disease management. I achieved the course competency by completing the proctored practice quiz in module three, where I spent many hours working on remediation. I learned to implement health screening, provide diet and medication management education, ensure client safety, and schedule follow-up appointments as needed.
The third-course competency prioritizes evidence-based, client-centered nursing care as a foundation for emotional, mental, spiritual, and social well-being. I achieved the course competency by reading Unit III in the Saunders comprehensive review for the NCLEX-RN® examination 8th edition book. New knowledge I gained included assessing the client’s mental status, providing support and empathetic care, promoting a comfortable environment, and using therapeutic communication techniques (Silvestri et al., 2020). I will apply the knowledge to my nursing practice by performing a mental status exam on my clients and assessing their emotional responses to their new environment. I will ask them if they need anything, like the TV turned on or other small acts of kindness. I will show active listening with eye contact and non-verbal listening cues like nodding my head for reassurance.
The fourth-course competency is utilizing data-driven nursing care strategies, including continuous quality improvement. I achieved the course competency by supporting my interventions with evidence-based research that includes peer-reviewed and scholarly articles. Throughout the quarter, every assignment and discussion post required research to support my ideas and nursing care plan for the case studies. Evidence-based practice is the key to improving healthcare quality and client outcomes (Chien, 2019). I will use data-driven nursing practice, proven successful through research studies, to enhance my client’s health status. Using data-driven nursing care strategies, such as continuous quality improvement, is the fourth course competency. I met the course competency by backing up my interventions with peer-reviewed and scholarly articles that were based on research that was backed up by evidence. Throughout the quarter, I had to do research for every assignment and discussion post to back up my ideas and nursing care plan for the case studies. Evidence-based practice is the key to improving the quality of healthcare and the results for patients (Chien, 2019). Research studies have shown that data-driven nursing practice works, so I will use it to improve my client’s health.
The fifth-course competency is to synthesize components of clinical judgment, professional nursing identity, and reflective practice for lifelong learning. I achieved the course competency by doing my best and promoting a safe and effective work environment around me. The clinical judgment considers the patient’s needs, applies the nurse’s knowledge, and determines client outcomes as indicated by evidence-based practice (Holman et al., 2019). The knowledge I gained will Help my future nursing practice by applying my nursing identity characteristics to make appropriate clinical judgments throughout my professional career.
The last course competency is determining effective responses to clinical problems by integrating information technology, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and inter-professional collaboration. I reached the course competency by participating in care study scenarios and assessing if my nursing interventions were effective. The quality improvement process is based on evidence and starts with identifying the standard outcome indicators to measure the effectiveness of the applied intervention (Holman et al., 2019). I will use the new knowledge I gained to ensure collaboration with an interdisciplinary team with evidence-based practice through quality improvement to determine the effectiveness of my nursing care.
I reached the transferable communication skill by effectively communicating with my fellow students, the staff at clinical, and my course instructors. I spoke effectively to my instructors about scheduling conflicts with professionalism and in a timely manner. The new knowledge I gained is to continue to advocate for myself and include all parties involved in the same email to decrease the risk of miscommunication. The transferable skill, critical thinking, was achieved throughout the course. I can successfully apply the necessary thinking skills to problem solve and make decisions to provide quality care to my clients. I can use the nursing process with the DECIDE model to make informed decisions using evidence-based practice to support the chosen nursing interventions.
The transferable skill, digital fluency, was achieved throughout the program using various software tools like creating a slideshow, brochure, memo, infographic, and written papers. New knowledge I gained included using Canva to create brochures, pamphlets, or infographics, and I will continue using Canva as a resource in my future nursing practice. I achieved the transferable skill of diversity and teamwork by working together with classmates on different projects like our Dementia PowerPoint in module one of Multidimensional Care IV. Everyone who worked on the project brought their perspective and expertise to create a well-rounded presentation on the disease process.
I achieved the transferable skill of information literacy by using current research data with evidence-based practice to improve client outcomes. I collected researched information on the disease process and created a care plan before simulation. Then throughout the simulation, I had to take the knowledge and use it to better care for the client. I also achieved the transferable skill of ethics and professional responsibility by learning my scope of practice and the scope of practice of others around me. I can delegate to LPNs and APs appropriately without anyone stepping outside their scope of practice. I will use the new knowledge to work effectively and efficiently while providing optimal care to my future clients to improve patient outcomes.
