Careers related to supporting individuals involved with the correctional system have evolved. Correctional institutions have evolved and presented the correctional officer with different challenges. The correctional officers have been supported by correctional counselors and treatment providers, which have been introduced in correctional institutions to support correctional processes.
The intersection of human services and corrections comes with the consideration of correctional officers as a human services worker through job enrichment. A correctional officer has expanded their roles to include human service obligations that contribute to the development of resilient prison environments in the accommodation of shifting needs and concerns of inmates and supporting the coping efforts. Human service officers strive to be complete correctional officers through being responsive to challenges posed for them and their wards by the prison. The correctional officers need nurturance and support if they are to survive.
