Reading specialists/Literacy Specialists play a vital role in developing, implementing, and evaluating literacy programs. Additionally, they must work collaboratively with teachers when working directly with students or serve as a source of support in professional development, planning, and providing instruction to students.
Imagine you are applying for a job as a reading specialist/literacy specialist at an elementary school. The administrators have requested you come prepared with an action plan demonstrating how you will promote, establish, and sustain collaboration across grade-level teams and school, district, and community stakeholders in promoting reading and writing across the content areas.
Identify one grade level (K-8) and create a 750-1,000 word action plan to present to the administration. Address the following in the action plan:
1. Curricular focus: Identify a focus for the literacy action plan that can be integrated by all content area teachers.
2. Collaboration: Identify two ways to collaborate with colleagues when planning and developing cross-curricular lessons/units. One collaboration strategy must include technology. Explain how you will ensure collaboration is productive and respectful.
3. Discuss best practices when collaborating with colleagues including:
• Designing assessments
• Interpreting data for decision-making about instruction
• Designing interventions for individuals and groups of students
4. Describe one way you will solicit student and parent input and involvement when planning the literacy environment and instruction. How will their involvement support and encourage positive social interaction, active engagement, and self-motivation?
5. Discuss ways you will serve as an advocate for all students in the following areas:
• Equitable literacy and language practices
• Positive social interaction
• Active engagement
• Access to materials
• Access to technology
Support your action plan with a minimum of three scholarly resources.
