Isolation Precautions are used for infections, diseases, or germs
that are spread by touching the patient or items in the room.
When performing a cardiac & respiratory assessment when a
patient is on isolation the following precautions should be
observed: (Infection Prevention and You, 2017)
1. Gown and gloves should be worn when in the patient’s room.
1. Make sure to take off the gown and gloves before leaving the
patient’s room.
2. Use hand washing or sanitizer when entering and leaving the
room.
3. Use a disposable stethoscope and BP cuff for this patient.
For the cardiac assessment, I would first review the vital signs and
see if anything is abnormal. Next I would look at the patient and
see a few things. Is he in pain? Is he having obvious trouble
breathing? Is he alert and oriented? Is his conjunctiva pale or
pink? I would then inspect the neck and palpate for the carotid
pulses. I would check peripheral pulses at this time including
pedal pulses at the same time. Next I can place the bell of the
stethoscope to listen for the swishing sound of the blood against
the carotid arteries. The patient may have to hold his breath as to
not interfere with the listening of the sound. Then I would proceed
