For your last assignment, you will create a Multimedia Project. You will research and present solutions using multimodal compositions in response to a national policy decision from the perspective of a constituent in your respective field of major.

Rationale statement:

This activity allows you to apply your knowledge within your field of study to a larger national issue. It is important for you to be able to see how your major, although maybe not directly involved, can still have connections to issues on a national level. This activity allows you to situate what you are currently learning within your discipline to a policy that directly aligns with the course. Using a multimodal delivery mode enables you to become more familiar with this form of engagement to expand your reach using visual compositions.

Activity/Assignment Description:

In December of 2020, a bi-partisan agreement restored (Links to an external site.)Pell Grants for incarcerated individuals after a 26 year-ban. Before the agreement, the Second Chance Pilot Program Pell Grant (Links to an external site.) was established to provide Pell funding for incarcerated individuals, but this was not permanent legislation. Now, with the restoration of the accessibility of Pell grants, more students across the US will be able to have access to higher education degree programs. With this national policy decision, personnel within the field of criminal justice reform are expecting more federal funding for not only college programs for incarcerated adults but also funding for programs that serve youth to decrease their chances of falling victim to the School-to-Prison Pipeline.

Your Task:

You have been invited to a national conference on literacy and criminal justice reform as a representative of a professional within your field of study at our university. You must prepare a presentation that demonstrates how you can contribute to the discussion to help policy makers and program directors make research-based, sound decisions on reasons why and methods of how to ensure the monies provided to various programs across the US are utilized effectively with the goal of increased literacy, access to higher education, and decrease students funneled in the school-to-prison pipeline. For example: If you are an architecture major, how can you make the case for increasing spaces in prisons for more well-designed, efficient classroom spaces and libraries? If you are a computer science major, how can an increase in technology yield more access to students being able to participate in online college programs?

You must prepare your presentation using a video platform of your choice (i.e. Windows Movie Maker, iMovie, PPT w/voiceover, Powtoons, etc.). The video presentation must be at least 3 minutes long (no more than 5) and must include visuals and your voice. The media center on campus is a great resource if you need Helpance.

You must include information from the course that you have learned in your presentation. Incorporate at least 3 of the sources from our course’s texts (including videos/documentaries).

In addition to the video, you must include a one-page written description explaining your rhetorical choices for creating the video, and how your approach fits within the scope of literacy behind bars. You must also answer the following questions:

How did you address the problem presented in the case study?
Why did you choose this approach?
What are your thoughts on using a multi-modal approach to providing solutions rather than a written composition?
