The Institute of Medicine’s 2000 report To Err Is Human:Building a
Safer Health Systemidentified health information technology (HIT)
as one avenue to explore to reduce avoidable medical errors. As a
result of the IOM report and suggestions for patient advocacy
groups, health care organizations are encouraged to act by
utilizing HIT to improve patient quality and safety.
