Clinical Field Experience B: ELL Instructional Strategies
Part 2: Plan and Reflect
The observation in the school shows that the school supports the learners in acquiring English language skills. One of the techniques I observed in the learning environment was to ask questions to the students. Asking regular questions would prompt their memory and improve their knowledge acquisition. Asking questions was vital in understanding the level of knowledge acquisition and appropriate interventions needed. Another observation is that the learning was taking place in small groups. The teacher would group the learners in small groups to improve interaction. Small group sessions were easier to handle and students were enjoying the approach.
I supported the language acquisition of the students I worked with by using pictures and motion cues. I used pictures to help the students learn new words. Pictures and videos are essential tools for ELL since it boosts memory and promotes interest to learn.
What I have learned will affect future practice since I will focus on using diverse media tools such as words, pictures, video, and audio to promote learning. Another tool is using songs to ensure the students are enjoying the learning process both at home and in school.
I will support the learners to acquire better skills by encouraging the parents to participate in the learning process. Parents spend time with the children in the evening and their participation is key. Parents can use their local or ethnic language to facilitate better learning. another strategy is encouraging the students to read short stories and learn new songs. Singing and reading short stories will excite the learners and create an urge to read stories. The strategies are effective for students with diverse learning needs.
