Evolution and trends of information systems infrastructure

The history of information systems infrastructure can be traced back to the first computer. The first system was implemented in 1960 in the field of account. The system could only tackle one function at a time. Overtime more applications were developed to serve different functionalities. Some of them include; Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Material Requirements Planning (MRP).

Before the evolvement of the first computer, business people and scientists used manual systems to store data. Advancement in technology has massively contributed to the advancement of information systems. ERP can serve different functions at a time. It plans to expand its market margin by reducing the license and the implementation cost. The most important thing in information systems infrastructure is the database. Most of them are designed in a way that allows development in the future. They are well managed for security purposes.

Information systems encompass software and hardware that are involved in collecting processing, storing and transferring data to the relevant destinations. Before their implementation companies used to manually collect and store information on paper. These systems have so far developed to help companies gain a competitive advantage over their rivals.

They have played a role in improving the management of companies. Nowadays, businesses are forecasting business performance using artificial intelligence computerized systems. Mobile commerce is also trending. It is a form of e-commerce that involves buying and selling of goods and services on online shopping platforms using wireless devices such as smartphones and tablets.

Apart from mobile commerce. There are other trends in information system infrastructure. These trends can be divided into technical and functional. Technical trends include; open programming and layers programming structure. Functional trends include new functionalities that were integrated into these information systems in the last five years. Some of them include; human resource management, business intelligence, and customer relationship management. The most recent enterprise resource planning can integrate several functionalities such as customer relationship management, knowledge management system and product lifestyle system.

With the development of technology, information systems infrastructure has developed rapidly. The first system was invented in the field of accounts. It could only handle a single function at a time. Overtime inventors have discovered systems such as enterprise resource planning that can handle different functionalities on the same platform. Mobile commerce is one of the trending information systems infrastructures, and it is anticipated to grow in the future.
