Background The aim of ship management is for safe, reliable and efficient operation of a vessel or fleet of vessels and as such an understanding of operational and regulatory requirements is needed. Modern day ship managers face pressures from various sources. These can relate to economics, regulations, marketing, technology, human resources, invariably a combination of all of these. You are a ship manager in a world’s leading third-party ship management company who delivers ship management services to a diverse fleet of cargo-carrying vessels including crude, products, chemical, and LPG/LNG tanker, bulk carriers ranging from a large fleet of self-dischargers to VLOCs, containerships from feeders to 19,000 TEU units, as well as many specialized vessel types, various offshore vessels including FPSOs, seismic vessels, cable layers and diving support/subsea units servicing the growing offshore market. Assessment Task Ship management includes a series of tasks which are to be carried out before, during and after the operation of a ship. In general, the tasks of ship management and operations can be divided into five aspects: strategic management, commercial management, technique management, compliance management, and human resource management. You director has charged you with writing a report that outlines the operational and regulatory requirements relating to the safe carriage of goods by the ships under the management of your company. You are advised to analyze ONE topic from the perspectives of any three of the above five aspects: strategic management, compliance management and technique management. For example, you can develop and justify voyage planning (or trading routes) taking into account relevant issues e.g. safety management regulations, weather systems, safe loading, carriage and monitoring of cargo, environmental considerations and so on. In this assessment, you are required to demonstrate detailed and systematic knowledge of, and an ability to critically analyse, evaluate and synthesise the key issues of ship management and operations. Specifically, you are required: • to comprehensively use a range of library-based and electronic resources and/or first-hand empirical data; • to present, explain and critically evaluate a range of substantive and theoretical arguments; • to demonstrate detailed knowledge, through structured and discursive writing, of the contextual challenges and implications of the topic you choose related to ship management and operations. Report Format The report should be word processed in size 12 font, line spacing 1.5, justified to both margins and should consist of the following: Title page, student ID, word count, contents page, introduction, findings and discussion, conclusion, reference list, appendices (if necessary) The report MUST be referenced using the Harvard system.
