Neurodevelopmental disorders are a category of psychological disorders that are characterized by abnormal development of the brain or central nervous system. These disorders typically begin in childhood and can affect a person’s cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning.
Four examples of neurodevelopmental disorders are:
Autism spectrum disorder: This disorder is characterized by difficulty with social communication and interaction and the presence of repetitive behaviors and interests.
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD): This disorder is characterized by difficulty paying attention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity.
Intellectual disability: This disorder is characterized by significant limitations in intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior, which affect a person’s ability to learn and function in daily life.
