The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) has identified three DNP Essentials that are most relevant to the completion of a Doctoral Project:
Scholarly Inquiry: This essential emphasizes the importance of using evidence-based practice to inform nursing practice and promote improvements in healthcare outcomes. In the context of a Doctoral Project, this essential would be relevant to the research and analysis components of the project, as well as the development and implementation of interventions or recommendations based on the findings of the project.
Clinical Scholarship: This essential focuses on the role of the DNP-prepared nurse in promoting and leading change in clinical practice. In the context of a Doctoral Project, this essential would be relevant to the practical application of the project’s findings and the development of strategies for implementing evidence-based practice in a clinical setting.
Partnerships for Improvement and Innovation: This essential highlights the importance of collaboration and partnerships in achieving healthcare improvements. In the context of a Doctoral Project, this essential would be relevant to the identification of stakeholders and partners who could contribute to the project, as well as the development and maintenance of collaborative relationships throughout the project.
In terms of the practicum/field experience component of a DNP program, all three of these essentials would be relevant. The practicum/field experience provides an opportunity for students to apply the knowledge and skills they have gained in their coursework and to work with practitioners and organizations to address clinical problems and promote improvements in healthcare outcomes. The practicum/field experience allows students to engage in scholarly inquiry, clinical scholarship, and partnerships for improvement and innovation in a real-world setting.
