Study Notes:
The types of abilities that historically have been most relevant to Marine effectiveness include physical fitness, discipline, and the ability to work well in teams. Additionally, abilities such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability appear to be important for Marines involved in cyber-security.
It may be difficult to find new recruits that possess the appropriate mix of abilities because the field of cyber-security is constantly evolving and requires a specific set of skills. Additionally, the pool of applicants with the appropriate abilities may be limited. To increase the size of the pool of applicants, the Marine Corps could reach out to educational institutions to identify potential candidates, offer training and development programs, and increase outreach to underrepresented groups.
The Marine Corps could use their existing workforce to deal with their need for cyber-personnel by offering training and development programs to current Marines. Advantages of this initiative include being able to utilize the existing knowledge and skills of the Marines, as well as the ability to quickly respond to the need for cyber-personnel. Disadvantages include the cost of training and development programs and the potential for resistance to change among current Marines.
