Advanced Nurse Practitioner Role:
I have chosen to become a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP). FNPs are advanced practice nurses who are trained to provide primary care to individuals and families across the lifespan. They are able to assess, diagnose, and treat common health conditions, as well as manage chronic illnesses and provide preventive care. FNPs are also able to prescribe medications and order diagnostic tests.

Why I am becoming a Nurse Practitioner:
I am becoming a Nurse Practitioner because I am passionate about providing high-quality, patient-centered care. As a FNP, I will be able to work independently and use my advanced knowledge and skills to make a real difference in the lives of my patients. I also appreciate the flexibility and autonomy that comes with being a Nurse Practitioner and the ability to work in a variety of settings.

Research Article:
One research article that I found on the role of the Nurse Practitioner is “The Role of the Nurse Practitioner in Addressing Health Disparities” by G.A. Foutch, published in the Journal of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners in 2016. This article states that Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are well-positioned to address health disparities among vulnerable populations. The article argues that NPs’ unique combination of advanced education and clinical experience, as well as their ability to provide continuity of care, makes them well-suited to address the complex healthcare needs of vulnerable populations. The article also notes that NPs can play a critical role in reducing health disparities by providing culturally competent care and by serving as advocates for their patients and communities.

Institute of Medicine (IOM) on Nurse Practitioners:
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) has recognized the important role that Nurse Practitioners play in meeting the healthcare needs of the nation. In a 2010 report, the IOM called for expanding the role of NPs and other Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) to help address the primary care workforce shortage. The IOM also called for removing barriers to APRN practice, such as restrictive scope of practice laws, to allow APRNs to practice to the full extent of their education and training.

Effects of being an Advanced Practice Nurse:
As an Advanced Practice Nurse, I will have a significant impact on both the healthcare industry and patient outcomes. I will be able to provide high-quality, patient-centered care that addresses the unique needs of my patients. I will also be able to work independently and use my advanced knowledge and skills to make a real difference in the lives of my patients. Additionally, I will be able to reduce healthcare costs by providing preventive care and managing chronic illnesses, and I will be able to improve access to care by working in underserved communities. Overall, as an Advanced Practice Nurse, I will be able to improve the health and well-being of my patients and contribute to the advancement of the healthcare industry.
