The U.S. judicial system is a hierarchical system that is divided into different levels and types of courts. The three main types of courts are local courts, state courts, and federal courts.
Local courts, also known as trial courts, are the first level of the court system and handle criminal and civil cases. These courts handle the majority of cases and are the first point of contact for individuals with the court system.
State courts are the next level of the court system and handle appeals from local courts. They also handle specific types of cases such as family law and probate.
Federal courts are the highest level of the court system and handle cases involving federal law and disputes between states. They also handle appeals from state courts.
The court system provides checks and balances by allowing individuals to appeal decisions made in lower courts to higher courts. This allows for a review of the facts and decision-making of lower courts and helps ensure that the law is applied fairly and consistently.
Judges are responsible for overseeing court proceedings, making decisions on legal issues, and enforcing court rules. They must also consider ethical factors such as the impartiality and fairness of the trial process.
