Foundation of Knowledge Model Paper
Compose a two to four-page paper (exclusive of the title page and reference page).
Use at least two scholarly references to support your content (these may include the course textbook).
Identify the situation that you are analyzing and apply it to the Foundation of Knowledge Model. Include an introduction, body and conclusion in your paper.
Address the following areas in the body of your paper: You can use the following as Level 1 Headings in your paper. These headings within the paper, should be bold and centered.
How did you acquire knowledge?
How did you process knowledge?
How did you generate knowledge?
How did you disseminate knowledge?
How did you use feedback, and what was the effect of feedback on the foundation of your knowledge? (Mastrian & McGonigle, 2021, p. 10).
How was nursing informatics used in this situation? ie..O2 sat monitor, Electronic Health Record, glucometer, Central line, any technology, computers, monitors, etc..
Use APA format, headings, title page, page numbers, running head, citations within the paper, and reference page. You can write in first person (meaning you can use the term “I” in the paper. For example: I work in a critical care unit where I noticed a patient’s BP lowering. I understood that this was not a normal level due to my education in nursing school.

Introduction
As a nurse working in a busy emergency department, I am constantly acquiring, processing, generating, disseminating knowledge, and receiving feedback. One situation that stands out is when I had to care for a patient who had anaphylaxis due to an allergic reaction to peanuts. Applying the Foundation of Knowledge Model, this paper will describe how I acquired, processed, generated, and disseminated knowledge, used feedback, and the role of nursing informatics in the situation.
Acquisition of Knowledge
My knowledge acquisition started during my nursing education, where I learned the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis and the appropriate interventions. Through ongoing education, I have been able to update my knowledge on the latest evidence-based practices and guidelines for managing anaphylaxis.
Processing of Knowledge
Upon receiving the patient, I quickly assessed and recognized the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis, which included airway compromise, hypotension, and urticaria. I then processed this knowledge and determined the appropriate interventions, which included administering epinephrine, initiating fluid resuscitation, and monitoring the patient’s vital signs.
Generation of Knowledge
In this situation, I generated new knowledge by recognizing that the patient’s anaphylaxis was triggered by exposure to peanuts, and that she had never experienced an allergic reaction before. This new knowledge enabled me to educate the patient on the importance of avoiding peanuts in the future and referring her to an allergist for further Assessment.
Dissemination of Knowledge
After administering the appropriate interventions and stabilizing the patient, I collaborated with the interprofessional team, including the allergist and the pharmacist, to ensure the patient received appropriate education and medication prescriptions. I also provided the patient with discharge instructions that included information on how to avoid peanut exposure, recognize the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis, and how to use an epinephrine auto-injector in case of a future allergic reaction.
Feedback and Its Effect on the Foundation of Knowledge
After the patient was discharged, I received feedback from the interprofessional team, the patient, and her family. The feedback was positive and reinforced my knowledge and skills in managing anaphylaxis. This feedback helped me to gain confidence in my abilities and to continue to provide evidence-based care to future patients.
Role of Nursing Informatics
Nursing informatics played a crucial role in this situation, as it helped to provide real-time monitoring of the patient’s vital signs using electronic health records, and ensured accurate and timely administration of medications using smart infusion pumps. Additionally, nursing informatics helped to facilitate communication and collaboration among the interprofessional team using the hospital’s electronic communication system.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the Foundation of Knowledge Model is a useful tool that enables nurses to reflect on their knowledge acquisition, processing, generation, dissemination, and feedback. In this situation, I acquired knowledge through my nursing education and ongoing learning, processed it to determine the appropriate interventions, generated new knowledge by recognizing the trigger for the patient’s anaphylaxis, disseminated knowledge to the interprofessional team and the patient, and received feedback that reinforced my knowledge and skills. Nursing informatics played a vital role in ensuring accurate and timely care. By utilizing this model, nurses can continuously improve their knowledge and skills, provide quality care, and enhance patient outcomes.
