In recent years, self-determination theory (SDT) has emerged as one of the most influential theories of motivation, offering a comprehensive framework for understanding the factors that support or hinder people’s motivation to engage in certain behaviors. Self-Determination Theory
SDT is a macro theory of motivation that posits that human behavior is guided by three basic psychological needs: autonomy, competence, and relatedness (Ryan & Deci, 2017). Autonomy refers to the need to experience a sense of control over one’s actions and choices, competence refers to the need to feel effective and capable in one’s pursuits, and relatedness refers to the need to feel connected to others and to experience a sense of belongingness.
