Public Health Care Program: Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) in Saudi Arabia

The Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) was launched in Saudi Arabia in 2019 as part of the Saudi Ministry of Health’s efforts to reduce the prevalence of diabetes in the country. The program aims to reduce the incidence of diabetes by promoting healthy lifestyles and providing early intervention for individuals at risk of developing the disease.

The DPP was designed based on evidence-based guidelines and best practices for diabetes prevention programs. The program consists of a combination of individual and group-based interventions, including dietary counseling, physical activity promotion, and behavioral modification strategies.

The target audience for the DPP is adults aged 18 and above who are at high risk of developing diabetes. This includes individuals with prediabetes, obesity, a family history of diabetes, or other risk factors for the disease.

To date, the DPP has shown promising results. A study published in the Saudi Journal of Medicine and Medical Sciences in 2021 found that individuals who participated in the program had significant improvements in their blood glucose levels, body mass index, and blood pressure compared to those who did not participate. The study also found that the program was well-received by participants and had a high level of satisfaction.

Overall, the DPP represents a promising public health care program in Saudi Arabia’s healthcare system aimed at preventing diabetes through evidence-based interventions targeting individuals at high risk of the disease.
