CASE OF A PATIENT The Most Common Complaints of Patients “I’ve been suffering from back pain for almost 5 weeks and can’t handle it any longer.” I’ve tried extra-strength ibuprofen, naproxen, and acetaminophen, as well as seeing a chiropractor, but I’m still suffering.” The Present Illness’s History Mrs. I.A., a 63-year-old white woman of small stature, has been referred to an orthopedic specialist by her primary care physician. For the past 5–6 weeks, she has been suffering with creeping back discomfort. Temporary relief is provided by over-the-counter medications, but the pain is persistent and exacerbated by activity. She denies any visible acute injury to her back, however she claims to have had a bad bout of the flu that lasted for a long time.
