Assignment 1
The whole Assignment (including Questions 1, 2 and 3) is to be submitted in hardcopy to BESS (6 Eastern Road ground floor) and Question 2 and Question 3 (as one Word file) are to be submitted to Turnitin on iLearn by 3pm on Wednesday 27th March 2019. An individual assessment coversheet is required for the hardcopy submission, which can be downloaded from the unit iLearn page or FBE website. Answers to Question 1 may be handwritten (as long as they are neat and legible) or typed. Answers to Question 2 and Question 3 must be typed.

Question 1 [30 marks]
Presented below are the number of males and females by age groups in the states of New South Wales (NSW) and the Queensland (QLD) on 30 June 2015. The Age Specific Fertility Rate (ASFR, per 1000) by woman’s age group in 2015 and the number of deaths by age group in 2015 are also presented in the table below. Using the information provided, calculate the following demographic indicators for NSW and QLD for 2015. Please keep 2 decimal places for all rates and use correct units of measurement:

v) Percentage population distribution by age and sex. [2 marks] vi) Present the mid-year populations of NSW and QLD in two separate population pyramids. [8 marks] vii) Describe the main differences in age structure between NSW and QLD in 2015 and discuss possible causes of these differences. [2 marks]
viii) Net international migration to NSW was 68,386 and net inter-state migration to NSW was -8,749 in 2015, and net international migration to QLD was 19,407 and net inter-state migration to QLD was 8,326 in 2015. Assuming international migration, inter-state migration, deaths and births were evenly distributed throughout the year, estimate the population of NSW on 1 January 2015 and on 31 December 2015 and population of QLD on 1 January 2015 and on 31 December 2015. [4 marks]
ix) Estimate the population growth in NSW from 1 January to 31 December 2015 and population growth in QLS from 1 January to 31 December 2015; and estimate the contribution to population growth by natural increase and by net migration in NSW in 2015 and the contribution to population growth by natural increase and by net migration in QLD in 2015. [4 marks]
