Good evening class, I hope that everyone's week is going well. For this week's topic, we are sharing our thoughts on the use of social media in the classroom. There are so many ways to utilize social media, people use it to share products, become famous, connect with friends, family, or even meet new people. But used in the classroom? Of course! Especially due to Covid and schools becoming much more internet-based now, it's extremely helpful to use.

As we read in 12 Ways To Use Social Media For Education written by Chloe West, our culture is becoming more and more technology-driven by the minute. Technology makes everything so much easier too (sometimes). Imagine if we had to do all of these 8 week-long courses by paper only? When I was a kid, I remember my aunt went to a college where they had no website. She would get sent a huge textbook in the mail each month and have to do everything by paper and mail it in every week. Now that I am an adult, I see that the method of schooling as my aunt did with no technology is not very time efficient at all, I couldn't even imagine not being able to learn new things at any given moment and always have my assignments ready for me to complete at the touch of my fingers.

Social Media can be so helpful for students and faculty. From the top-down, Admin can publish job openings for their schools, faculty can connect over social media to get advice and learn new ways to teach something, students can connect with fellow students, they can’t help each other with studying, get any support if they need it, and also join their school's groups/organizations and clubs. I just recently used social media to connect with an AMU group/organization called Save The Earth and now can connect with others to like to volunteer to help out the community.

Thanks to social media I can finally get the Education that I want. Before E-Learning became so popular I never thought I'd even be able to go to college because I didn't have the time to sit in a classroom due to work and no means for daycare for my baby. Now I can do it all at my own pace because it's right at the tip of my fingers. I can even learn a new lesson when I get a break at work, or whenever my baby is preoccupied. With social media, we can hear class announcements and even listen to live lectures. I use Pinterest all the time to share my ideas and to help me get new ideas for school projects. I know it's quite ironic saying this after writing 450 words but, long story short, social media is becoming almost a necessity in this technology-driven world we live in and without e-learning, I definitely wouldn't be where I am today.

Long week already but no excuses. Yes, I absolutely agree that social media has a place in the classroom. In the article "12 Ways to use social media for education" by Chloe West she provides some great examples. For example, using Facebook for class updates and changes is a better alternative to a campus message board in my opinion. Most people will check their social media accounts first thing in the morning and seeing a delay or cancelled class on Facebook first thing will allow them to plan their day accordingly. She also provided a great example of campus wide communication via social media for crisis event. Active shooters and other emergency events have been on a uptrend in the last few years and being able to effectively and quickly reach as many students as possible is a necessity.

With that being said, I do believe that there is a point were social media can be detrimental to the classroom. Many modern social media platforms do indeed have many distractors on their timelines. These can easily get in the way of learn during class time. The same can be said about off topic conversations had during class time. Even worse, cyber bullying and shaming are increasing and the presence of social media in the classroom could have a negative effect and result in children being bullied online. overall, I do believe that social media in the classroom can be a positive supplement to in class learning if proper moderation in discussion boards and forums are established.
