Discussion #1: Public Health and Vaccines
Epidemiology is the basic science of public health. We will spend the semester exploring the field, but what is public health? According to the American Public Health Association (APHA), “public health promotes and protects the health of people and the communities where they live, learn, work and play. While a doctor treats people who are sick, [public health practitioners] try to prevent people from getting sick or injured in the first place. [Public health practitioners] also promote wellness by encouraging healthy behaviors.” Read the rest of the description and watch the short video on the APHA website (Links to an external site.).
All of us are impacted by public health policy, and epidemiology informs this policy. There is currently a great debate in the U.S. regarding mandatory COVID-19 vaccinations for eligible students in K-12 and higher education. Read this article discussing key considerations in this debate (Links to an external site.). Construct a discussion post stating your opinion on whether or not COVID-19 vaccinations should be required for students in the U.S., and support your opinion. Public health is rarely black and white. It’s okay if you have a gray area response (i.e. only certain groups should be required to receive the vaccine), just explain your reasoning.
Your initial post is due by (due date on syllabus). In order to receive full credit, your post must include:
• A 1-2 sentence introduction of yourself (degree program, why you are taking this class, and anything else you want us to know)
• A statement of opinion on this issue
• Support of your opinion using information from the APHA website and PBS article on the COVID-19 vaccine requirement issue (~3 sentences or more)
All posts should have a professional tone and not include any political statements. Replies to other students is encouraged but not required; however, we will respect ALL opinions in this class, and replies should add to the discussion and be professional in tone.

What is Evidence-Based Management (EBM)
Evidence-based management can be defined as making decisions using critical thinking and the best evidence available to solve an issue or problem. Organizational outcomes, such as profit, performance, and quality of care, are dependent on the choices managers. As such, individuals want to make decisions based on reliable evidence.
Reliable evidence can include work for well-known cited sources (i.e. Centers for Disease Control), academic peer-reviewed journal articles, or organization data. Individuals’ decisions should be made using a variety of reliable evidence to make a stronger case for why the solution is appropriate.

The assessment offers a brief summary of the various styles and additional presents some behaviors that may influence selection for leadership positions.
Once completed, please answer the following questions:

2. If you have not, how do you think these traits would help you to achieve your goals?
4. Can you foresee a situation where your leadership style would cause issues or make it more difficult to effectively lead?
