Introduction
Across the field of psychiatry, mental health practitioners apply a vast array of models as well as theories with the aim of determining the basis of patient behavior and planning for the necessary incentives required. Nonetheless, a significant number of these theories are yet to be fully developed and substantiated, which means that they have to be incorporated with other studies and concepts (Sommers-Flanagan, 2012). As such, it is imperative for the involved caregivers to understand that the level of credibility and applicability of such theories is limited thereby taking the initiative to engage in extensive research on the underlying issue.
Rationale for using the Theories
To guide my practice in psychotherapy I will apply one counseling theory and one nursing one. The nursing theory is Orem’s self-care theory because it allows for the development of a clinical plan while facilitating the implementation of effective self-care measures. The theory is founded on the hypothesis that individuals are capable of looking after themselves and when this ability is distorted, the clinicians can help them regain it through education and care provision (Shah, Abdullah & Khan, 2015). While applying it to my practice, this theory will allow me act as the change agent and facilitator for my patients. I will make sure to provide all the information to the patients concerning their ailment status while educating them and providing direct care with the aim of positively influencing their lives. This approach will be structured around the idea that the patients are personally responsible for their health.
Orem’s self-care theory will be applied hand in hand with Aaron Beck’s cognitive theory as the counseling theory that will guide my practice in psychotherapy. The theory explores the behavior of an individual by analyzing their thought processes. It is also geared towards present problem-solving instead of dwelling on the past by considering the ideology that the thoughts of an individual translate into their emotions as well as behavior based on the process of processing information (Wheeler, 2013). The rationale behind choosing this theory is that I will be in a position to understand the thinking process of the client and their understanding of reality. The theory will also help in the development of new perspectives through restructuring their thought patterns thereby promoting effective Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) measures.
Goals and Objectives of the Practicum Experience
For the practicum experience of this course, three major goals and objectives will be prioritized. The three goals are; the effective administration of therapy, the management of client crisis, and performing accurate diagnosis and documentation. As for the objectives, they are; basing my practice on the updated research materials and evidence, effectively managing the needs of the clients, and to effectively conduct accurate diagnosis.
Timeline
Between the first and four week, I will have had clearly understood my expected roles while developing competent interpersonal relationships with other practitioners. By the sixth week, I will have familiarized with conducting different diagnosis and the effective assessment of clients to deliver the necessary psychotherapy. At the end of the experience, I will be in a position to develop competent care plans, apply the CBT across different contexts, and educate patients on promoting a healthy lifestyle.
Conclusion
For my practicum experience, I will be in a position to it is imperative to understand that the level of credibility and applicability of theories is limited thereby taking the initiative to engage in extensive research on the underlying issue. Therefore, to guide my practice in psychotherapy I will use Orem’s self-care theory in conjunction with Aaron Beck’s cognitive theory as the counseling theory.
