Choosing data to solve a problem
Welcome to Week 2!
At this point, you have chosen to either complete an action research project, or to create a formal data-based improvement plan. In both instances, there are two major challenges 1) narrowing the topic of interest into a measurable research question or specific data point to focus on, and 2) Obtaining permission from a site to conduct research (or gather data), that will give you the information you need. This week we will begin working through these areas.
This week you should begin completing the CITI Training (Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative). The CITI Training informs students about ethical and legal research standards. The training takes several hours and may be completed in more than one sitting. For IRB approval you MUST SCORE 80% or better on each module. At the conclusion of your training you will want to download your scores so you have them handy. Go to the following link: https://www.citiprogram.org to access the website, but you may also find this link under Student Resources. Take the student version (Basic Education) of the CITI Training (the student version is free) and select “Keiser University” when it prompts you for Institutional Membership. If you have questions, please contact your instructor for Helpance. These modules should be completed prior to submitting your IRB Application.
Tasks:
Paper: Chapter 1 (ARP) OR Data Collection Paper (DBP)
Week 2 Assignment: Data-Based Improvement Plan Project
Purpose
Now that you have selected a topic and project, you are ready to choose a data-based improvement plan. This paper provides you an opportunity to create a formal plan that identifies the data you will utilize to drive your improvement plan. You will build on the plan related to this data over the next two terms. This assignment also includes an opportunity to begin a literature review to supplement your Week 1 findings.
Assignment Directions — Part I: Data-Based Improvement Project
Create a summary of the proposed topic for the data-based improvement plan (taken from week one). Include the problem, your initial goal for the improvement plan, and a statement that explains why this plan matters.
Describe where you will locate data to learn more about this problem. Discuss how will you obtain access to this historical/archived data?
Describe the data you will use (population/grade level, etc.).
Using three additional sources, provide any essential history or background on this problem in the field, or past solutions that have been attempted to overcome it.
Page Requirements
5-7 pages excluding the title page and references.
References
This assignment should use a minimum of three quality references (e.g., .org, .edu, peer-reviewed journals, etc.) obtained from the library and/or scholarly online sources (in addition to the 3-5 you used in the Week 1 paper). You will need your APA Manual for this assignment.
Grading Criteria
This assignment comprises 10% of your grade.

Week 2 Written Assignment Rubric
Quality of Content (80 Points)
___/40: Reflective and critical thinking (i.e., application, synthesis, analysis, and/or Assessment) are used to discuss the problem and what data is best to analyze this problem on a deeper level. Student includes a plan to access this specific data.
___/40: Student utilizes at least three additional peer-reviewed sources to provide history or background on the problem and solutions that have been attempted to overcome.
Quality of Writing (20 Points)
___/ 5: Format – Text meets APA/MSE standards.
___/ 5: Organization – Organization of paper demonstrates critical thinking. (Paper contains cover page, introduction, conclusion, headings, and effective transitions).
___/ 5: Precision – Student uses terminology and writes clearly and concisely.
___/ 5: Mechanics – Student spells, constructs sentences, and punctuates correctly.

Week 2 Assignment: Action Research Chapter 1 Revised
Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to formalize your chapter 1 given the feedback from your professor in Week 1 and begin building toward chapter 2.
Assignment Directions
Create a title for your study that is representative of the subject or topic (i.e., title is often a derivative of the research question or the research question itself; see examples of students’ thesis papers/ARPs posted in course).
Reiterate your proposed area of study including your problem statement, rationale your research question, and your significance statement from week 1 (Revised). In addition, include the following essential specifics; review examples posted to get an idea of the detail needed for these elements:
Setting or site where study will be undertaken
The participants or population (age, range, gender, students, teachers, colleagues, etc.)
Support your chosen area of focus (problem statement and research questions) using the three sources from the week 1 paper and three additional sources (these should be peer-reviewed articles) which will serve as the basis of your literature review (Chapter Two).
Page Requirements
5-7 pages excluding the title page and references.
References
This assignment should use a minimum of 3 additional quality references (e.g., .org, .edu, peer-reviewed journals, etc.) obtained from the library and/or scholarly online sources (added on to the 6 you used in the week 1 paper). You will need your APA manual for this assignment.
