Environmental issues span larger geographic areas
Environmental issues span larger geographic areas but are sometimes left to be addressed at the local level. As a result, it is critical that we prioritize protections for people crossing borders. We can educate communities about ozone pollution and the factors that contribute to it at the local level. We can discuss reducing vehicle pollution because transportation is largely responsible. This could be accomplished by encouraging the use of public transportation, green transportation such as biking or walking, or carpooling with friends. These actions would contribute to a reduction in local transportation pollution.
It is also critical to ensure that we are aware of these issues at the national level. For example, we could experiment with expanding the use of electric or hybrid trucks for long-distance transportation. Public transportation could also transition to hybrid or electric vehicles. We could also pass legislation prohibiting the use of diesel in transportation. A subsidy for companies that switch to hybrid or electric vehicles over diesel vehicles could help incentivize the switch. If possible, we could install filters on long-distance transportation to prevent/reduce emissions.
