Argument Essay 1
1. Choose one of the readings from Readings for Module 1: “Private Lives? Leave Me Out”; “Why Colleges Should Require a Gap Year”; or “Students Who Lose Recess Are the Ones Who Need It Most.” This will most likely be the reading you used for your summary, but feel free to choose a different one if you like.
2. Develop a thesis in which you agree or disagree with one of the points the author is making. (Although you may come up with a middle position, do not “agree and disagree,” since that makes for a weak thesis.) Alternatively, you can take the topic in a different direction if you like. Make sure that, if you choose to agree with the author, you do not simply repeat the author’s argument. Add additional points, reasons, or examples. Remember, this paper should be your argument, not merely a summation of the author’s ideas.
3. Write a well-organized essay of approximately 500 words. Be sure to have a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. This will be about 2 pages, typed, double-spaced, using 12 point Times New Roman font. Follow all MLA guidelines.
4. You do not need to do additional research for this essay. You must use the reading you are working with as a source. You must correctly use in-text citation and include a Work Cited entry for the article. Note that I have provided the Works Cited entry at the end of each article.
(You’re welcome!)
Whenever you need to complete a Works Cited entry on your own, you can use a citation generator to help you with your citation, but don’t depend on it to be accurate. You need to check it!
Refer to pages 96-107 (Integrating Sources) in your text for help with incorporating your source into your paper.
5. If you are uncertain how to begin this essay, read through pages 17 and 18 in our text: “One Critical Reader’s Path to Creating a Meaning: A Case Study.” This section gives some insight into taking someone else’s ideas and using them as a starting point to developing your own opinion.
6. Additional information about persuasive writing can be found on pages 39-44 in your text. Note: do not include visual arguments for this assignment—written essay only.
7. Turn in your final, edited copy to Brightspace by the due date.
