Harry, Ron and Hermione – their initial meeting and the subplot that changes the relationship, along with the climax of the book when their friendship is solidified
* Include discussion of the subplots: • Did our initial meeting of Harry and the Dursleys, along with the owl fiasco, connect the reader to the poor orphan who becomes “Harry”? • What place did the mirror or Erised (Desire spelled backwards) have in the story? • How did the Troll subplot move the story along – or not? • Did Hagrid’s dragon segment mean anything to the story? • What did the obstacles to get to the Sorcerer’s Stone provide to the story? • any other subplots that are relevant….? * Was the symbolism within the book obvious or obscure and did it really add to the story itself? • The number three • The Mirror of Erised • The names of several characters • Harry’s scar • Wand choosing • among others…. * Do the themes move the story along and/or engage the reader?: • Good vs Evil • Coming of Age • Doing What’s “Right” • Love and Friendship • Death • others….
Develop an essay in MLA format, at least 3 pages long – typed, double spaced – 12pt fonts (the 11pt Calibri font that Office defaults to is very small, so please be sure you’re specifically using 12pt fonts in Times New Roman or Arial, or Book Antigua or a similar font). And, make sure the paragraphs are indented. We do not use block style in English, that’s for use in letters and memos. Include at least 5 quotes from the book that support your points. Quotes, paraphrasing, summaries should be kept to a minimum, and never overload the essay.
You do not have to include all of the subplots, symbolism, or theme. Only what makes sense about Harry, Hermione, and Rons friendship
