RESEARCH CRITIQUE 1
Assignment:
The research critiques are an opportunity for you to practice analyzing research publications to get an idea of their meaning and quality. It is being completed as a group activity because such analysis always benefits from multiple viewpoints and backgrounds.
As part of this assignment, you will be carrying out group reading discussions in class, posting initial answers on Canvas (split this up among the group), getting group feedback, and then assembly and submission of the complete assignment online.
Grading: The grades for this assignment are given to the group, and it will be designated as full credit, reduced credit (e.g. late assignment or missing a substantial number of core concepts), and no credit (e.g. failure to submit the assignment). That said, this assignment is intended to generate interesting discussions rather than be a “hard” grade. Also, it is understood that some aspects of research Assessment have a subjective component. For subjective questions (see #9 below for an example) you would not typically be marked down for having a position that varies from that of the instructor if it is clearly stated.
Questions: For the Eckenrode (2010) and Hudson (2010) articles, please explore the following questions for each. Always paraphrase when possible, rather than quoting, and do not write more than 4 sentences per question. Also, make sure to elaborate on your positions and do not simply offer yes/no answers.
1) Was there a clear purpose statement or research question? Please paraphrase what the paper was investigating.
2) Was the significance of the study clearly presented?
