Question1: What determines social class?
Social class is a group of people that have similar socioeconomic status. Various theories have been developed to explain social class in the nineteenth century. Philosophers such as Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Jean-Jacques discuss multiple social studies, such as criminality. Social type is determined by wealth and income, education, prestige, and occupation. Social grade is determined by the number of wealthy possessions, which differentiate people from different categories. People with more wealth are considered to have a higher social level, hence more respected in society.
On the other hand, the income a person received determines their social level, such as income from a professor, a doctor, and a fruit vendor. Also, the kind of job a person does defines their social class, such as being a lawyer or an administrator, making a person consider having a higher social level. Getting higher education makes a person get better job occupations, learn a higher income, live a comfortable life, and be considered part of a higher social class, considered a person who has received low-quality education.
Question2: What are three types of social mobility?
Social mobility is the change in wealth and social status over time and a change in health, education, and literacy rate. The three types of social mobility include horizontal mobility, vertical mobility, and upward mobility. Horizontal mobility is a type of mobility where a person changes their type of occupation, but their social status remains the same. For example, varying from being a doctor to being a professor. Vertical mobility is a type of mobility that involves a change in a person’s social position through changing their occupation, economic status, social, and political status. The third type of social mobility includes upward mobility, where a person or a group of people move from a lower social class to a higher social status. Upward mobility can be costly, especially when striving for success. For example, the upward movement may cost a person relationships, spiritual life, and social life.
