As an advanced practice nurse, you will run into situations where a patient’s wishes about his or her health conflict with evidence, your own experience, or a family’s wishes. This may create an ethical dilemma. What do you do when these situations occur?

In this Lab Assignment, you will explore evidence-based practice guidelines and ethical considerations for specific scenarios.

To Prepare
Review the scenarios provided by your instructor for this week’s Assignment. Please see the “Course Announcements” section of the classroom for your scenarios.

Based on the scenarios provided:
Select one scenario, and reflect on the material presented throughout this course.
What necessary information would need to be obtained about the patient through health assessments and diagnostic tests?
Consider how you would respond as an advanced practice nurse. Review evidence-based practice guidelines and ethical considerations applicable to the scenarios you selected.
The Lab Assignment
Write a detailed one-page narrative (not a formal paper) explaining the health assessment information required for a diagnosis of your selected patient (include the scenario number). Explain how you would respond to the scenario as an advanced practice nurse using evidence-based practice guidelines and applying ethical considerations. Justify your response using at least three different references from current evidence-based literature.

Ethical Concerns
The situation presents an ethical dilemma since the patient intends to back playing in an upcoming three days later. Further engagement in sporting activities can increase the risk of more harm. Further harm can cause internal injuries that can threaten the life of the patient. The first step is to assess the magnitude of the injury and the level of care the patient requires. For example, it is important to determine if the patient requires a head scan to assess the health condition and severity of the risk. A head scan will determine if the patient has internal injuries that require advanced treatment. For example, if the patient has internal injuries, it is important for them to be admitted and skip the upcoming match. Studies show that diagnosis is crucial in ensuring that patients receive accurate treatment (Owen et al., 2018). An elaborate diagnosis will establish if the patient is facing other health risks.
If the head scan report shows that the patient is not at risk, it is essential to advise the patient to skip matches and take some time to heal. I will provide additional information about the risks of head injuries. During the engagement with the client, it is vital to acquire the trust of the patient. Trust is an important aspect to ensure a client perceives that a healthcare practitioner has the best interests of a patient (Ozaras & Abaan, 2018). The advice would help the client to avoid irresponsible decisions that can undermine the health and safety of the patient. Ethical codes of nursing practice ensure nurses utilize their best knowledge to take care of their patients. Ethical practice ensures practitioners do not violate the ethical code of conduct (Beykmirza et al., 2019). Providing elaborate information to the patient will prevent them from engaging in activities without taking precautions.
