Aslan, H., Erci, B., & Pekince, H. (2021). Relationship between compassion fatigue in nurses,
and work-related stress and the meaning of life. Journal of Religion and Health, 61(3), 1848–1860. https://doi.org/10.1007/s10943-020-01142-0
This cross-sectional research study was conducted to investigate the work-life balance, the
meaning of life outside of work, and work-related stress in association with compassion fatigue
in nurses. The data was collected in face-to-face meetings where nurses filled out four separate
forms in a 10-15 minute timeframe. The study found positive correlation between work-related
stress and compassion fatigue. Increased work-related stress also increased compassion fatigue
which also negatively impacted their outlook on life outside of work. With the findings of this
study, it was concluded that empathetic and compassionate nurses are necessary to carry out
high-quality, compassionate care. Therefore, organizations need to provide support to protect the
nurses from compassion fatigue, such as improving work conditions, nurse to patient ratios, and
providing in-services and training programs on coping mechanisms to reduce wor-related stress.
Cocker, F., & Joss, N. (2016). Compassion Fatigue among healthcare, emergency and Community Service Workers: A systematic review. International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, 13(6), 618. https://doi.org/10.3390/ijerph13060618
This study was a systematic review comprised of thirteen relevant studies on a combination
of nurses and community service workers. This review ultimately recommended further research
to determine how to best protect the most vulnerable healthcare workers and how organizations
can work towards trying to prevent compassion fatigue and other mental health outcomes they
may be at risk for.
Gustafsson, T., & Hemberg, J. (2021). Compassion Fatigue as bruises in the soul: A
qualitativestudy on nurses. Nursing Ethics, 29(1), 157–170. https://doi.org/10.1177/09697330211003215
This was a qualitative study that aimed at exploring compassion fatigue that nurses experience and how it affects them in their personal and professional lives. The data consisted of texts from interviews with seven nurses in a variety of different settings. In conclusion that compassion fatigue can leave scars, but like bruises, with time they will fade. However, it may leave scars and the nurses with a sense of caution which in turn, can negatively impact patient care and being able to provide high-quality care.
Upton, K. V. (2018). An investigation into compassion fatigue and self-compassion in Acute Medical Care Hospital Nurses: A mixed methods study. Journal of Compassionate Health Care, 5(1). https://doi.org/10.1186/s40639-018-0050-x
This was a mixed-method study that was designed to investigate the environmental and
psychosocial factors that affect the prevalence of compassion fatigue in an acute care setting
nursing staff and whether self-compassion can be used as a coping strategy. This study
concluded with findings that could lead to organizations encouraging self-compassion and
well-being of the nursing staff to protect themselves from the effects of compassion fatigue.

MAN6974: HCMBA Abstract, Problem Statement, & Annotated Bibliography
Abstract
In 2010, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was passed as a measure to regulate healthcare by providing more coverage to Americans. It provided an estimated 31 million previously uninsured
Americans access to healthcare; however, the law failed to control spending. Many of the 2020 presidential candidates are proposing a single payer healthcare system, but this option is facing resistance from citizens, health insurance companies, and government agencies. This healthcare policy analysis will calculate the impact that a single payer healthcare system will have on stakeholders including citizens, hospitals, physicians, payors, and policy makers. It will evaluate the economic impact of a single payer system and include evidence-based research to analyze the possibilities for success or failure. It will conclude with a recommendation about transitioning to a universal healthcare system feasible.
Problem Statement
How can the Massena Memorial Hospital decrease the number of emergency room visits for non-emergency issues?
