Walden NURS6053 Week 2 Assignment latest
Application: Systems Theory
As noted in the Learning Resources, systems theory provides a meaningful and beneficial means of examining challenges in health care organizations. To do this effectively, however, it is essential to assess all system components, as some may be relatively healthy while others are problematic.
For this Assignment, you apply systems theory to the examination of a problem in a department or a unit within a health care organization. (Note: You may use the same problem you identified for the Discussion as long as it meets the criteria for this assignment.)
To prepare for Walden NURS6053 Week 2 Assignment latest:
Review the Meyer article, “Nursing Services Delivery Theory: An Open System Approach,” in this week’s Learning Resources. Focus especially on the information presented in Table 1 (p. 2831) and Figure 2 (p. 2833).
Reflect on your organization or one with which you are familiar. Within a particular department or unit in this organization, identify a problem the staff is encountering.
Using Table 1 in the Meyer article as a guide, analyze the department or unit, identifying inputs, throughput, output, cycles of events, and negative feedback. Consider whether the problem you have selected relates to input, throughput, output, cycles of events, and/or negative feedback.
Think about how you could address the problem: Consider what a desired outcome would be, then formulate related goals and objectives, and translate those goals into policies and procedures.
Research professional standards that are pertinent to your identified problem.
Reflect on the organization’s mission statement and values. In addition, consider how addressing this problem would uphold the mission and values, while improving the organizational culture and climate. (Depending on the organization you have selected, you may have explored these in the Week 1 Discussion.)

Week 2 Assignment Sample – The impact of increasing healthcare costs on healthcare organizations and the consumers.
INTRODUCTION
The adage “Health is Wealth” becomes more important as we become older. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), excellent health is based on three pillars: physical, mental, and social well-being (n.d.). Any modifications to any component can be pricey. Increasing healthcare prices have had a negative impact on the proverb “health is wealth”; today, one needs a decent insurance plan or to be financially stable to be able to finance healthcare bills. The United States has one of the highest healthcare costs in the world, spending $3.6 trillion on healthcare in 2018, or an average of $11,000 per person, according to a report by the Peter G. Peterson Foundation (2020). The increasing healthcare costs have different impacts on a consumer and healthcare organization.
There are various factors involved that contribute to an increase in healthcare costs. Hence, it is essential to discuss increasing healthcare costs as a national health issue to improve the outcome.
IMPACT OF INCREASING HEALTHCARE COSTS ON HOSPITALS.
At least 20 percent of household earnings spent on healthcare insurance, deductibles, and out-of- pocket costs (Lyford & Lash, 2019). Even though some employers provide health insurance, it comes with a high value. In contrast, businesses like hospitals can profit from existing high healthcare prices (Gee, 2019). Hospitals benefit more than other health care industries like the pharmaceutical companies because they “shifted their growth strategy in outpatient services” (Gee, 2019). This type of profit also increases competition with non-hospital-based practice, which leads to hospital raising their prices for patients (Gee, 2019). The hospital raising prices, which benefits the organization but not their consumers.
THE ORGANIZATIONAL DATA TO QUANTIFY THE IMPACT
As an employee of a hospital in New York City, the increasing healthcare cost significantly impacts healthcare organizations. One of the highest healthcare costs is hospital-based care (Gee, 2019). According to the federal government, healthcare costs will grow more than 5.5 percent annually for the next decade (Gee, 2019). Mount Sinai is one of the largest healthcare organizations in New York City. About 1.3 trillion dollars in the United States of America predicted in hospital spending (Gee, 2019); hence it is essential to understand how increasing healthcare costs has affected the organization. In 2017, the United States spent $10,739 on Medicare & Medicaid Services in the united states, which is very costly than other countries (Lyford & Lash, 2019). In 2018, Mount Sinai Hospital announced a rise in their income by 28.4 percent to $205.2 million due to increased outpatient services and lucrative inpatient cases (Lewis, 2018).
FACTORS IN INCREASING HEALTHCARE COSTS AT DIFFERENT HOSPITALS
According to Gee (2019), the spending variation determines which geographic location is in a high-spending region or low-spending region. For example, the price of cesarean section delivery varies across the United States, ranging from $3,636 in Tennessee, compared to $20,721 in the San Francisco area (Gee, 2019). Unfortunately, most consumers are not aware of these charges because an insured consumer will have their insurance pay for a certain percent, and the consumer pays the rest. For example, some factors that determine hospital prices depend on the hospital’s location and the type of insurance. The type of insurance determines the healthcare costs; for example, a patient with private insurance is the source of most hospital’s profit rather than public insurance, such as Medicaid or Medicare (Gee, 2019). The increasing healthcare cost has a positive impact on healthcare organizations such as hospitals, but it harms the consumers.
Many factors contribute to the rapid growth in healthcare costs; some factors include “more people, an aging population, changes in disease prevalence or incidence, increases in how often people use health care services, and increases in the price and intensity of service” (IHME, 2017). The two main factors are rising healthcare prices and an aging population. The healthcare prices are predicted to increase the annual rate of 2.5 percent, and expected that individuals age 65 and over are going to increase by 16 million over the next decade (Peter G. Peterson Foundation, 2019). At least 20% of a family’s income goes toward insurance, deductibles, and out-of-pocket costs for health care (Lyford & Lash, 2019). Even though some employers offer health insurance, it is expensive. On the other hand, businesses like hospitals can make money off of the high prices that are already in place (Gee, 2019). Because they “shifted their growth strategy in outpatient services,” hospitals benefit more than other parts of the health care industry, like drug companies (Gee, 2019). This kind of profit also makes non-hospital-based practices more of a threat, which causes hospitals to raise their prices for patients (Gee, 2019). The hospital is raising its prices, which is good for the business but not for its customers.
THE ORGANIZATIONAL DATA TO QUANTIFY THE IMPACT
As a worker at a hospital in New York City, I can tell you that the rising cost of healthcare has a big effect on hospitals and other healthcare organizations. Hospital care is one of the most expensive parts of health care (Gee, 2019). The federal government says that healthcare costs will rise by more than 5.5% per year for the next ten years (Gee, 2019). Mount Sinai is one of the largest places in New York City that provides health care. Gee (2019) estimates that hospitals in the United States will spend about $1.3 trillion this year. Because of this, it is important to understand how rising healthcare costs have affected the organization. In 2017, Medicare and Medicaid Services in the United States cost $10,739. This is a lot more than other countries (Lyford & Lash, 2019). Mount Sinai Hospital said in 2018 that their income had gone up by 28.4% to $205.2 million. This was due to more outpatient services and profitable inpatient cases (Lewis, 2018).
REASONS WHY HEALTHCARE COSTS GO UP AT DIFFERENT HOSPITAL
Gee (2019) says that the difference in spending determines whether a place is in a high-spending region or a low-spending region. For example, the price of a cesarean section delivery can range from $3,636 in Tennessee to $20,721 in the San Francisco area (Gee, 2019). Most people don’t know about these fees, though, because if they have insurance, the insurance will only pay for a certain percentage, and they will have to pay the rest. For example, some things that affect hospital prices are where the hospital is and what kind of insurance the person has. Health care costs depend on the type of insurance. For example, hospitals make more money from patients with private insurance than from those with public insurance like Medicaid or Medicare (Gee, 2019). The rise in healthcare costs is good for healthcare organizations like hospitals, but it hurts the people who use them.
Many things are causing healthcare costs to rise quickly, such as “more people, an aging population, changes in disease prevalence or incidence, increases in how often people use health care services, and increases in price and intensity of service” (IHME, 2017). The two main causes are rising health care costs and a growing number of older people. Prices for health care are expected to rise by 2.5% per year, and the number of people 65 and older is expected to grow by 16 million over the next 10 years (Peter G. Peterson Foundation, 2001). These factors can lead to America in a healthcare cost crisis.
