People in the United States vary widely in their acceptance of the sexual and gender choices and orientations. The impact of those with views of lesser acceptance is felt the hardest by the most vulnerable among us- our children.
Watch the following video of a Ft. Worth City Councilman speaking about his experiences as a young man marginalized based on his sexual orientation and consider the impact such a message would have on a young person in a similar situation and on an adult who is intolerant of the LGBTQ community.

Compare and contrast what you believe the experiences of these two individuals (the insecure LGBTQ youth and the intolerant adult) viewing this message would be. How might it reinforce existing beliefs about themselves or motivate them to see themselves and/or the world differently? What additional information would you propose to share with either or both of these individuals to persuade them into such a paradigm shift?

The LGBTQ community has always been a topic of discussion in society. Unfortunately, not all people accept the sexual and gender choices and orientations. The most vulnerable among us, our children, are the ones who are affected the most. The impact of people with intolerant views is enormous on LGBTQ youth, who may feel insecure and marginalized. Ft. Worth City Councilman Joel Burns gave a powerful speech, “It Gets Better,” describing his experience as a young man who was marginalized based on his sexual orientation. This essay aims to compare and contrast the experiences of the insecure LGBTQ youth and the intolerant adult viewing this message. Furthermore, it will discuss how this message could reinforce existing beliefs or motivate them to see themselves and/or the world differently. Finally, additional information will be proposed to promote a paradigm shift for both individuals.
When a young LGBTQ person views Joel Burns’ speech, they may feel validated and empowered to embrace their identity. Burns’ story portrays the struggles and challenges faced by the LGBTQ community. The youth may feel that they are not alone in their struggles, and that there is hope for a better future. This message may encourage them to embrace their identity and work towards creating a society that is more accepting and tolerant. On the other hand, when an intolerant adult watches the speech, they may feel uncomfortable and defensive. Burns’ message may challenge their existing beliefs, and they may find it difficult to accept. They may feel that the LGBTQ community is trying to impose their beliefs and values on them, and that they have the right to hold their own beliefs. As a result, they may reject the message and become more intolerant towards the LGBTQ community.

Furthermore, it is essential to educate them about the LGBTQ community’s history and the progress that has been made towards achieving equality. This knowledge can help them understand the struggles faced by the LGBTQ community and inspire them to create change. For the intolerant adult, it is essential to educate them about the LGBTQ community and the struggles they face. They need to know that their beliefs and values can have a significant impact on the lives of LGBTQ people. Furthermore, it is essential to provide them with resources and support to help them understand and accept the LGBTQ community. This education can help them realize that their beliefs can be harmful to others and motivate them to create a more accepting and tolerant society.
