PARTS OF THE ESSAY-These parts are REQUIRED.
Any essay that does not include these required parts will receive a very low grade, perhaps as low as 0 (zero, cero, nihilo, ????? ).1) Introduction with thesis. In this section the author should clearly and briefly state the purpose of the essay and present the thesis (argument). This is not to be a mystery novel, do not leave the reader in the dark and then surprise them at the end. A page or so should be more than enough enough for this section.2) Body – narrative that contains the evidence. Here the essay presents the story, evidence and arguments in a logical and convincing manner. This section will constitute the largest portion of the essay and should receive a great deal of attention. The text should follow a logical progression that the reader can easily follow. The body must be broken up into paragraphs that deal with only one idea at a time and that flow easily from one idea to the next. EACH IDEA, OR PART OF THE ARGUMENT, MUST BE SUPPORTED BY QUOTED EVIDENCE FROM THE SOURCES THAT IS PROPERLY CITED (see below). A good essay may also present contradictory evidence or arguments, as appropriate, and demonstrate why the author did not choose them. Remember, a paragraph should have a minimum of five (5) sentences. The writing should be engaging, never flippant or boring.3) Conclusion. Here, the author summarizes the essay and makes concluding remarks. The conclusion should not be a restatement of the introduction. As this is the last thing the reader will read, it should be strong and convincing. As with the introduction, a page or so should be enough.4) Title page: title of the paper, name of the author, the course name, and the date.5) One inch margins (all 4).6) Double space text.
7) Ten or twelve point font.8) Chicago Style footnotes or endnotes as described in The Chicago Manual of Styleare required. Turabian and Hacker describe the essence of Chicago Style in their respective books. Microsoft Word inserts and numbers footnotes brilliantly. In MS Word 2007 and later, there should be a “Reference” button in the toolbar. From there, choose “footnote.” Please note that footnote numbers should be superscript and not italicized. Use the MSWord default settings. For the details of Chicago-style citation and bibliography see: Turabian, Kate L. A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations. (This is an abbreviated version of The Chicago Manual of Style, and is the style most commonly used by historians. The Chicago Manual of Style. This is the full-blown version, 920+ pages. Another very good and easy to use manual is – Hacker, Diana. A Pocket Style Manual. There is also a link to an abbreviated version of this work on the Lone Star College – Tomball Library web site. You may also find instructions here – https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/717/01/9) Page numbers. No additional information is needed in the header or footer, but the author’s name may be included.
1) Not less than four (4), nor much more than five (5) full pages of text. No, of course the title page does not count, nor does one line of text constitute a full page.Page of 24
12) Bibliography. This is an alphabetical listing of all sources quoted in the paper. The reference works listed in #8 describe the proper formatting of the bibliography. The following items MUST BE AVOIDED ? Any essay that includes any of the following will receive a lowered grade, perhaps as low as zero (0, 10-10, ?nought)
4) Misspelled words and poor grammar are at best distracting and may greatly weaken the argument.15) Passive voice, it is usually vague and weak.Passive – The Anti-Federalist arguments were not listened to very much because they were not presented with an alternative to the Constitution.(In this case ?arguments? is the subject and ?were listened to? is theverb. The verb acts upon the subject rather than the other wayaround, making the subject passive. Thus, ?they? refers to?arguments,? which, of course, makes no sense.)Active ? The Anti-federalists did not present the public with an alternative constitution. This made their arguments less persuasive to many people.16) Long quotations and/or many short quotations. The essay should present the author?s analysis in the author?s (your) own words. Quotations should be limited to a short phrase or even just a word or two. Please see the example at the link in Requirement 8.17) First and second person pronouns: I, we, you, et cetera.18) Contractions: it?s, can?t, et cetera.19) Vague words: thing, it, et cetera
20) Towards. It is an archaic form of toward, and should not be used in formal writing in the U.S.21) Present tense. The essay is about history; past tense generally works best.If you are unsure of any part of the assignment, please ask for clarification before the assignment is due. Dumb questions will not hurt your grade, dumb mistakes will. After completing each draft, PROOFREAD CAREFULLY. Once you are certain that the essay is as perfect as possible PROOFREAD again. Do not let a hoard of small mistakes damage a fine piece of scholarship.
