Bishops in The Early Church

Bishops in The Early Church
The apostles, who were blood relatives of Jesus, the missionaries, and other early followers of Jesus were given authority in the early church. Despite the fact that the bishop is mentioned quite frequently in the new testament, little little is known about the bishop's role in the early church. The hierarchical leadership of the early Christian church was consisted of three major grades during the time of the apostles: bishops, priests, and deacons. The bishop, who was also known as the evangelist on occasion, served as the head priest, the administrator, and the ruler of a number of different dioceses. In addition to performing functions such as baptizing believers and conferring blessings on the holy communion, appointing and ordaining priests and disciples, and supervising important church operations such as the formulation of financial policies, he was the founder of the Christian church. It was the responsibility of the priests, who were also known as elders or presbyters in common parlance, to teach, govern, and administer the sacrament to the assembly. The deacons were the lowest ranking members of the church and provided assistance to the bishops by teaching and carrying out certain responsibilities inside the church.
In the Christian community, the role of the episcopacy was unclear and relatively variable until the beginning of the second century. These three terms were frequently confused with one another and employed in a manner that was not entirely distinct from one another. The term "bishop" was sometimes used to refer to the overseer of various congregations within an area, and other times, it was used to refer to the clergyman who was in charge of a local church, regardless of whether it was the apostle who was occupying the position and the office during that time period. As can be seen in the New Testament, by the beginning of the second century these terminology had begun and eventually attained a set shape, with every position being entirely separate from one another and their roles being precise.
These three ministries were acknowledged as key components in the framework of the early church. Ignatius, the bishop of Antioch, moved to the city of Rome during the second century, where he was eventually put to death. As he traveled, he stopped at a number of churches; some of these churches had been established by Paul and supported the doctrine of the tripartite ministry. In his writings, he emphasized the significance of a bishop and stated that a congregation of believers who lacks the "threefold ministry" is not qualified to become a church. This was one of his main points.
The members of a congregation are the ones who choose their bishop. However, as a result of the church's ongoing development, a number of protestants have become opposed to the office of the bishop. They said that during the medieval ages, the bishop had amassed a significant amount of civil power, which posed a risk to the church's commitment to maintaining its spiritual integrity.
To this day, only the Roman Catholic Church, the Old Catholic Church, the Anglican Church, the Orthodox Church, and a select few other churches continue to sustain the apostolic succession while still maintaining the position of bishop. Lutheran churches in the United States, Germany, and Scandinavia are examples of denominations that do not adhere to the doctrine of the bishop and hence do not support it. Even now, the majority of protestant churches do not have bishops in their leadership structures.
