This week we are going to take a closer look at various models for health delivery systems for various countries outside the U.S. Therefore, you are encouraged to seek out information related to the National Health Insurance Model (used by Canada, Taiwan, South Korea), Bismarck Model (used by Germany, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Japan, Switzerland & some of Latin America), Beveridge Model (used by Great Britain, Spain, Scandinavia, New Zealand, & Hong Kong), the Out-of-Pocket Model (only developed industrialized countries) or any other health systems model to use for comparison. After watching the Sick Around the World video (found in the required readings for this module-please google it), you have been assigned the task of creating an universal healthcare system design for your population/citizens, how would you answer the following:
Describe what type of model you would choose to design your system and explain rationale (why).
Explain how your system you have created would cover two underserved population groups such as an ethnic or cultural minority, women, children, elderly, or disabled.
Choose one country that has a universal healthcare model (from the list of models in the assignment overview or from the Sick Around the World video) and describe how it works. Discuss one positive and one negative.
