Present an analysis of a business case.
1. Problem • A significant outcome or problem has no explanation
2. Decision • Focused primarily on an explicit decision that must be made
3. Assessment • Assess a performance, act, or outcome

– What went wrong to cause the disaster and what operational changes should
BP make?

How to Approach a Case
1. Study the situation • Describe the problem, decision or Assessment you are facing in the
case
2. Develop hypotheses • Propose causes underlying the situation
3. Analyze and identify options • Extract and analyze data in the case; identify possible options
4. Evaluate • Which option, action or explanation is the best
• Identify possible weaknesses in your recommendation and how
to mitigate

Writing and Presenting a Case
1. State the Conclusion First • Briefly state your assessment and the critical few supporting
reasons
2. Make the Case • Present the options that were considered
• List decision criteria used to evaluate options
• Apply the criteria to analyze each option
3. Recommendation and Action Plan • State your recommendation
• Outline the corresponding action plan for what should be done in
short, medium and long term
• List any potential risks of your recommendation and how the risks
might be mitigated

1. Each team will have 4 – 5 students
2. Teams are randomly selected by instructor
3. Teams will decide how best to organize and do the work

Grading Criteria
• Quality of the written business case assessment
• Situationally appropriate use of course concepts and
methods
• Quality of presentation slides: 8-12 clear, well-designed,
succinct slides; well-written (grammar, spelling, etc.)
• Well written (structure, grammar, spelling, etc.) paper
summarizing your business case analysis and conclusion
(1,000 – 1,500 words, double-spaced)
• Anonymous team survey re: team member participation
• Clear, persuasive oral presentation (8-10 minutes)

Team’s purpose is clear, and presentation has clear focus. Clear organizational logic. Transitions between ideas are handled well.
Team’s purpose is clear for the most part. The report is organized effectively. Presentation’s organization could be refined/tightened (headings, better transitions, etc.).
Team often loses focus on the main point of the document. Presentation must be organized more effectively, as readers will be confused or misled.
Main point of the presentation is unclear and vague. Little coherent structure in this presentation. No clear rationale for why the presentation is set up the way it is. The presentation is confusing.

The team has made an excellent analysis and accurately incorporates course concepts, research, and sources, helping strengthen/build the argument with this material.
The team made a good analysis and use of course concepts, research, and sources. In a few places the presentation’s main point could be strengthened with additional evidence.
The presentation would be substantially strengthened with more/better analysis leveraging course concepts, research, and/or sources; and/or the evidence presented is formatted in a sloppy, distracting manner.
The presentation is weak because of a lack of analysis, incorporation of course concepts, evidence, and support, and/or the evidence used is formatted so poorly that it’s difficult to tell what is cited.
