Catch 22 Book Report essay

ENG4U ISU Part 2 covers the remainder of your independently chosen book
Due date: Friday, Dec. 18 to the Assignment Dropbox called ISU Part 2
Thematic Analysis using 3 significant quotes from the final ⅔ of your book. The
quotes should be no more than 2 lines in length. Lengthy quotations will not be
counted in your word count.
REMINDER: There is no “I believe; I think; it seems to me;We should; We are; in formal
writing.
In formal writing, your opinions are not overtly stated but are embedded in the
“proof” and examples that you include in your report.
There is also no “The author says…” as the authors are writing, not talking.
“What the author means…” is also a no-no. “What the author is trying to say” No.
Identify the formal theme that you will be analyzing in your report. It can be different from
your ISU Part 1.
You will locate three significant quotes that are spread out from the remaining pages of
your book or all the quotes are located at the end of the book.
You can explore 1 theme or you can explore 3 themes if you wish. That would mean that
each quote is supporting a different theme. It will probably be easier to examine 1 theme
with 3 quotes to back it up; however, that may not be possible, so you may explore 3
themes using 3 different quotations.
Identify a quote that illustrates this theme. (Three quotes in total are needed for this report.
You will write 2 pages of analysis for each quote. The quotes are from throughout the rest
of the book.)
Briefly explain what is happening in your book when the quote appears. That would mean
4 sentences maximum that summarize the plot as it relates specifically to your theme at
the time of the quote.
Identify elements in the book that support the quotation and the theme.
Elements include plot, character, setting, connotative and denotative language,
figurative language
Analyze your quote through 2 of the literary theory lenses that we have studied this
semester.
(Marxism, capitalism, psychoanalytic/Freudian theory, Jungian/archetypal theory,
Gender theory or postcolonialism)
Marxism: Who owns the wealth in the story? Are they the heroes in the story? Or seen as
greedy? Is it a story where the little man in society achieves wealth and is happy to move
up in society=capitalism? Is it a plot where the rich people just go from one party to
another and the waiters and other service people are not even individual characters?
Psychoanalytic/Freudian: Is the character a brooding mess due to childhood trauma like
The Joker in Batman? Is the character a bully due to the lack of motherly love and fatherly
bullying during childhood=Trump? Is the person wonderful and they grew up in a loving
family and they continue the love?
Gender: Is it a story about how hard life is for single moms? Is it a story of victory for a
woman/gay person who overcomes prejudice in society and who are victorious in spite of
society’s rules?
Jungian/archetypal theory: Is it a story about a hero’s or heroine’s journey? Are deeply
held psychological archetypes evident in the story? Are the characters deeply self-aware
and their journey is through former trauma in their lives?
Postcolonialism: Is this plot about people fighting for recognition in their lives due to race
or years of oppression that have not been completely obliterated? BLM and Indigenous
stories (generally) fit in this category.
In your essay, your thesis must be supported by references to specific quotations and
situations in the novel. You must also reference at least one critical review you have
read for each of your quotes. This critical review can be about a “topic” you are
addressing (such as homelessness, mental strength) from an expert in that field or an
expert who is writing about the book you have selected. Please note that references to
the critical reviews and the use of quotations will give your essay depth and insight, in
addition to demonstrating your level of engagement with the original book.
This report must be 6 pages in length. It must be typed and double-spaced. Proper
documentation of quotes and sources is required. At the end of your work, you must
also have a Works Cited page (for those of you working in MLA) OR a Reference Page
(for those of your working in APA formatting).
Additional Notes:
1. All steps of the ISU must be completed for the written essay to be evaluated. The
ideas presented in your final essay must be present in your notes from the novel and in
the summaries of the secondary sources (critical reviews). Bibliographical information
must be present for every source that you consult in your research process.
Use the internet and appropriate class handouts to prepare a list of Works Cited, as
well as for guidance on how to properly format your quotations.
2. You MUST acknowledge the ideas of your secondary sources when you use them
in your essay. This must occur whether you are using a quotation or paraphrasing the
author’s ideas. It is a privilege to use another author’s ideas in your work; therefore,
please give credit where credit is due.
3. The due date for the ISU Report is non-negotiable, except in specific cases. If you
are unable to meet the deadline, it is expected that you will notify Ms Lynett as soon as
possible to discuss an alternate submission time. It is not sufficient nor acceptable to
request an extension on the same day that the essay is due.
A short concluding paragraph that sums up your main theme(s) and your findings.
