Directions for each discussion post:
1. Answer each question with a meaningful separate paragraph response (no bullet points) with complete sentences.
2. Do NOT cut a paste information. Do NOT use quotes as answers. Use your own words.
3. Cite your sources as applicable. Use APA formatting.
4. I encourage you to read other student postings after you have posted — it can be very educational to learn another perspective or additional information. Your student reply is due by the end of the current unit.
5. If you make a mistake (for example, forgetting sources) then just hit reply to continue the thread and mention you are adding to your post. You are not able to delete or edit your postings.
6. You are not able to view other postings until you have posted your original post. Posting a “blank” will result in a zero (posting a blank allows you to view other postings without posting your original post first and is not accepted in this class).
DISCUSSION POST #3 ):
Q1: Consider a time when you were an advocate (patient? neighbor? family member?) – without sharing names or identifiers, what did you do for this person? Did you approach them or did they approach you? Did you have the tools to help this person? Please share your experience.
Q2: Consider the multiple roles of a caregiver. And consider the perspective of someone needing needing help. How does advocacy go beyond the obvious? What goes beyond the obvious in advocacy? To put it another way, how can we better understand and reach out to the people in our community?
Q3: What percent of homeless folks have mental health issues? What are barriers to Helping those mentally ill and those that are homeless? Do some research to find the numbers for your community (King County, Snohomish County, etc.) and share your findings.
Q4: Read the article attached below. It is one of my favorites! A good example of advocacy and a grassroots approach. Note, this article is from 2001! After reading the article, could Dr. McConnell’s mission be adapted to your neighborhood? Why or why not…provide details and examples of why it would or would not work in your opinion.
