Visualizing Data: Part 1
To address the problem that LGBT teens are more likely to be rejected by their families and kicked out of their homes than other groups of teens, two datasets were considered very important: Orientation and associated problems. Choosing these datasets helped in understanding the magnitude of the two problems among LGBT teens.
A frequency distribution would be conducted to determine the actual effect of the respondent’s sexual orientation and the other associated problems. Among the 100 respondents, a higher frequency distribution was evident among those identified as heterosexual and either as a gay male or a lesbian female, with each having a frequency distribution of 40. In contrast, those that identified as bisexual demonstrated a frequency distribution of 20. These results indicate that the rejection from families of LGBT teens does vary based on one’s sexual orientation. It does appear that the families are more accepting of those that identify as bisexual compared to the teens identifying as bisexual than the heterosexual then the gay male/lesbian female teen.
Regarding the issue of associated problems and focus on the LGBT, 12 members indicated dealing with family conflict. Three respondents acknowledged the juvenile justice involvement challenge, 18 reported sex trafficking problems, 5 reported mental health problems. Finally, 2 of them indicated substance abuse challenges. These problems also contribute to the rejection of LGBT teens from their families coupled with their sexual orientation.
These findings demonstrate a strong correlation between a teen being rejected by their family with identifying their sexual orientation for LGBT. The negative family reactions that ultimately demonstrate family rejection are exacerbated when other challenges are experienced within the family. From this study, a considerable number identified dealing with the sex trafficking challenge while very few asserted dealing with substance abuse problems. Nonetheless, the research acknowledges that the identified client problems occur to many teenagers who their families reject due to their identified sexual orientation.
Visualizing Data: Part 2
The different types of visual presentations seek to express the researcher’s findings through visual aids. They include charts, diagrams, among other graphics (Lumen Learning, n.d.). Notably, each plays its fundamental role to ensure that it communicates the data properly to the audience and the latter can interpret it accurately. The bar graph is preferred for comparing the categories as it allows the latter to be demonstrated distinctively using bars in contrasting colors. The line graphs are preferred to compare categories but specifically their trends. Charts such as the pie chart are preferred for demonstrating the composition of the data or rather the pieces to an entire whole. The scatterplot is mainly used to identify and illustrate the relationships between two numeric variables, the dots within the plot will show the values of the individual data points and also the patterns of the data when it is considered in its entirety, it is prudent that this list is not exhaustive of all the different graphs, charts and diagrams that could be used in visual presentation.
Comparing the bar graph and the scatter plot below clearly shows how the visual presentation types seek to attain their primary objectives. For the bar graph, the two bars representing the orientation and problem category are very distinct for each client researched. The relationship between the two axes of the two categories and the respective discrete values is evident from the bar graph. Conversely, the scatter plot demonstrates the whole data of orientation and associated problems in its entirety. The scatter plot is very effective in showing the non-linear pattern between orientation and the associated problem. The relationship between these two categories can be assessed while looking into the whole data in its entirety.
