Technology plays a prominent part in the current world we live in. As a nurse, we work in a personally and professionally challenging environment (Scanlon, 2000). Networking and social media use have increased in the past decade and have influenced how we interact with one another or the outside world. The nursing school where I work has a policy to maintain a professional relationship and maintain professional boundaries. This policy includes networking and social media posts and not having students as your friends on social media. Last semester, some of the students at the facility came to the Dean to ask about social media's policy and the appropriateness of what faculty posts and befriending students on social media. The Dean had to investigate this to find out who the faculty was and found inappropriate pictures, and the students were friends on this faculties profile. Some students were offended by the images and had to come to the Dean. They also felt that there might be retaliation from the faculty if they do not accept the friend request. This led to a meeting where the faculty was reminded of the social media policy and maintenance of professional boundaries with students.
Social media in nursing academia has benefits but may have professional implications if not used appropriately. The nurse leaders can help develop policies and best practices that enable the faculty and students to understand e-professionalism (Duke et al., 2017). Faculty must be mindful of the boundary issues with students. Students may feel pressured to accept friend requests fearing retaliation. Some of the complaints against nurses regarding social media use include breach of privacy and confidentiality, failure to report privacy violations, lateral violence against colleagues, communication against employers, boundary violation, and employer/faculty use of social media against employees or students. Some of the action plans to minimize the incidence of social media violations by nurses will include policies and protocols on social media use. Some of the elements which need to be emphasized would be lateral violence; social media posts against coworkers even during non-working hours can be counted as lateral violence. Boundary violation is another vital issue, and nurses need to be aware of it. Nurses have access to personal and medical information and are in a position of power professionally. Students use social media for networking and sharing information more than faculty. This could be attributed to the generational gaps in how different generations use social media and how they benefit from it.
